Knauf Insulation North America announces Environmental Product Declaration for Earthwool 1000º Pipe Insulation

Shelbyville, IN (September 11, 2014) – Knauf Insulation North America today announced the availability of an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) for Earthwool® 1000º Pipe Insulation and Earthwool® RediKlad™ Pipe Insulation. The pipe insulation is used to insulate iron and copper piping in industrial applications and in commercial and institutional buildings. It offers excellent resistance to heat loss or gain, which saves energy and lowers operating costs.

“This is the first EPD for this class of product in the world,” said Scott Miller, director of sustainability for Knauf Insulation North America. “We believe an EPD is the ultimate expression of transparency from a manufacturer, allowing products to be compared for environmental impacts.”

The vast majority of Knauf pipe insulation goes into commercial buildings. Products with EPDs can contribute to earning building product disclosure and optimization credit under LEED v4 certification.  Knauf Insulation now has three different products with EPDs that contribute to the 20 products required for this credit. In addition to pipe insulation, Knauf Insulation has EPDs on faced and unfaced batt insulation and blowing insulation. This allows architects and engineers to have one consistent specification strategy throughout the building.

“Architectural design firms and mechanical firms seem to be disconnected when it comes to material selection for the mechanical room,” said Miller. “While building designers might have an indoor environmental product strategy to eliminate or minimize things like volatile organic compounds and formaldehyde, the mechanical room is largely ignored.”

Many modern projects are designed to have formaldehyde-free products but products containing formaldehyde find themselves into the mechanical room supplying air to the building. Often the mechanical room materials selections are determined by the mechanical engineer, not the architectural firm. ” We hope this EPD helps to bridge that disconnect,” adds Miller.

Knauf Insulation Earthwool® 1000º Pipe Insulation with ECOSE® Technology provides an environmentally sound indoor air quality solution, with its GREENGUARD and GREENGUARD Gold certifications. Under these certifications, it is certified for low chemical emissions during product use, and it is validated to be formaldehyde free. Earthwool® 1000º Pipe Insulation is manufactured from a minimum of 50 percent post-consumer recycled bottle glass and is the only formaldehyde free glass mineral wool pipe insulation available on the market today.
