Knauf Insulation
North America Named Air Conservationist of the Year
ECOSE®
Technology Largely Responsible for Reducing Emissions at Company’s
Lanett Facility
(LANETT, Ala., August 25, 2010) — Knauf
Insulation North America announced today it was named Air
Conservationist of the Year by the Alabama Wildlife Federation
(AWF). The award recognizes Knauf Insulation’s Lanett facility for
significant emissions reductions and a commitment to sustainable
manufacturing processes and product development.
The Air Conservationist of the Year is one of
14 annual AWF Governor’s Conservation Achievement Awards,
considered the most prestigious conservation honors in Alabama.
During the past 30 years, AWF has presented these awards to
individuals and organizations that make significant contributions
to the conservation of Alabama’s wildlife and related natural
resources.
“Knauf Insulation’s number one priority is to
develop products that improve energy efficiency and reduce the
environmental impact of America’s buildings,” said Bill Taylor,
Knauf Insulation’s director of Lanett plant operations. “Our
sustainable manufacturing principles are particularly important
given the fact that in the U.S. alone, buildings account for nearly
40 percent of all energy used and about the same percentage of
greenhouse gas emissions, which is more than any other business
sector.”
To earn AWF recognition, Knauf Insulation’s
Lanett facility reduced binder-related chemical emissions, such as
phenol and formaldehyde, by 94 percent starting in March 2009 when
it switched to ECOSE Technology, a bio-based binder that eliminates
all the non-renewable petroleum-based ingredients used in most
fiberglass insulation. This creates a more sustainable insulation
product and generates fewer emissions from the manufacturing
process. The plan is to completely eliminate these plant emissions
by the end of 2010.
“ECOSE Technology allows us to meet our
rigorous product and manufacturing sustainability standards,” added
Taylor. “The Air Conservationist of the Year award is testament to
this technology’s impact in buildings insulated with our products
and the communities where our products are made.”
Knauf Insulation also installed a wet
electrostatic precipitator at the Lanett facility that, when
coupled with ECOSE Technology, reduced particulate matter emissions
by more than 50 percent. In addition to reducing its manufacturing
emissions, company products save 330 pounds of carbon dioxide each
year for every pound its plants emit.
