Knauf Insulation Has Received UL Environmental Product Declarations for Three Products

Shelbyville, IN (November 22, 2013) – Knauf Insulation North America, the fastest-growing and one of the most respected insulation companies in the world, has received Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) from UL®, a reputable global independent safety science company.  EPDs were received for EcoBatt® Kraft Faced Insulation with ECOSE® Technology, EcoBatt® Unfaced Insulation with ECOSE® Technology and Jet Stream Ultra® Blowing Wool Insulation.

EPDs provide a comprehensive written report that outlines how a product affects the environment.  Through EPDs, manufacturers have a credible, streamlined and universally understood outlet to be transparent in all aspects of a product’s life cycle, from raw material extraction, production, packaging and distribution, end-use and disposal.  EPDs include information about a product’s impact on global warming, ozone depletion, water pollution, ozone creation and greenhouse gas emissions.  In addition, they are included in the just-released LEED® v4 requirements.

“Applying for EPDs is a voluntary practice that sets manufacturers that participate apart from those that don’t,” said Scott Miller, director of sustainability at Knauf Insulation North America.   “Knauf Insulation believes that it’s in the best interest of public welfare and the environment to reduce the negative impacts associated with the entire life cycle of consumer products.  That’s why we were the first company in the U.S. to have a bio-based binder for all of our insulation products.”

EcoBatt insulation with ECOSE Technology is a glass mineral wool that has more than 50 percent post-consumer glass content and a bio-based thermosetting resin that gives the product shape.  EcoBatt insulation comes in high density for optimizing thermal values in small areas.  In addition to its excellent thermal properties, EcoBatt insulation can provide for acoustical needs.

Jet Stream Ultra Blowing Insulation is an unbonded, glass mineral wool insulation that is manufactured with more than 50 percent post-consumer recycled content.  The insulation is designed with optimal thermal properties and excellent coverage and blowing characteristics.  It is installed in open attics of both new and existing structures and/or in closed cavity applications with the Blow-in-Blanket System.

“At Knauf we understand that the average person spends up to 90 percent of their entire life indoors,” Miller said.  “According to the EPA, 72 percent of the total chemical exposure experienced in a lifetime comes from indoor sources and products that make up a building’s construction, which can be sources of that exposure.”

Knauf Insulation’s Sustainability History
Earlier in 2013, Knauf Insulation began participating in the International Living Future Institute’s™ Declare ingredient label program, which is aligned with the Living Building Challenge, making it the first fiberglass insulation brand to be listed on the International Living Future Institute’s Declare list.

2013 marks the fifth anniversary for Knauf Insulation’s implementation of ECOSE® Technology, a plant-based binder that replaced phenol and formaldehyde as the industry standard.
